Gudgeon (Gobio Gobio)

From the Genus of Cyprinidae and the sub-Family Cyprininae

Lives in shoals in mainly shallow waters, swimming fast near the bottom.

A small fish with an elongated, spindle-shaped body, covered with quite large scales apart from the scaleless top rear of the head. The lateral line is complete. The Dorsal and anal fins are short. The mouth is set very low and has two short barbels at the corners.

The back is black-green to grey-green, with dark spots that become purple or blue over the silver-grey flanks. The scales have dark edges and there is an indistinct longitudinal band. Natural food consists of insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans.

Dunno how to catch ‘em but guess small natural baits trotted on the bottom.

The British record weight for a rod-caught Gudgeon is 5oz. There is no current Association record. Gudgeon over 2oz can be registered as an Association specimen.
