This is the home of the fish pages.  If you are a taxonomic genius, and especially if you have any good quality pictures of any of our local species I would be most interested in hearing from you.

In the meantime I am doing some research, and will be publishing as soon as possible.  If there is an underlined link here then there is some information on the site about the species concerned.

Not in our waters, mate?

The following species are recorded in British Waters and have record weights recorded for them, but so far not in Southdown Association water.

Barbel – swift flowing streams, not in our present portfolio.

Bitterling – in symbiosis with freshwater mussels in flowing water. Confined to a very few localities and rare in the UK.

Bleak – a river species that looks (and appears to be treated) like a sardine.

Silver Bream – there may be some in local waters, often mistaken for a skimmer we may yet get someone claim a specimen.

Bullhead - probably everywhere but the rod caught record of 1oz is a challenge!

Grass Carp - a foreigner, and no further records are being accepted in UK

Wels Catfish – another foreigner removed from the list.

Brown Goldfish – Try a park!

Minnow - well a J. Sawyer used a rod and line for his 13.5 Dram record!

Golden Orfe – ornamental pond jobbie, a sort of swimming carrot.

Zander – not here, and probably not wanted either.

Pumpkinseed – looks like a Perch on acid! American native with thankfully very limited range in the UK.

Ruffe - purported to exist on the Marshes – who’s going to be the first?

3 Spined Stickleback – D Flack, with a pretty small hook I guess, for his 4 Dram British record.
